FAQs

FAQs

  • How are cultivated diamonds made?

Cultivated diamonds are grown from tiny carbon seeds of pre-existing diamonds. Advanced technology – either extreme pressure and heat (HPHT) or a special deposition process (CVD) – mimics the natural method of diamond formation.

  • What’s the difference between cultivated diamonds and moissanite or other diamond stimulants?

Diamond stimulants, such as moissanite and cubic zirconia, look similar to diamonds but are not true carbon crystals.

  • Can you tell the difference between cultivated diamonds and naturally mined diamonds?

No, cultivated diamonds consist of actual carbon atoms arranged in the characteristic diamond crystal structure. Since they are made from natural diamonds, they exhibit the same chemical and optical properties.

  • Does my diamond come with a certificate?

Yes, all our diamonds come with certification by GIA or IGI.

  • What are the 4 C’s?

Carat weight measures the weight of the stone. A metric carat is defined as 200 milligrams. Each carat is subdivided into 100 points. This allows very precise measurement to the hundredth decimal place. For example, a diamond that weighs 0.9 carats has ninety points. All else being equal, diamond price increases with carat weight because larger diamonds are rarer. However, two diamonds of equal carat weight can have very different values depending on three other factors of the 4C’s: Cut, Colour and Clarity.

Cut refers to how well a diamond’s facets interact with light based on how the stone was polished to reflect the most light and brilliance. Ideal is the best cut because it meets exact proportions to reflect the most light. Only Round Brilliants can be graded as Ideal because their proportions have been perfected by empirical and mathematical data, and they have the strictest cut standards out of all the shapes. All diamond cuts have five grades: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor.

Colours of diamonds range from D to Z. Colourless diamonds are stones that don’t have visible yellowish tints. Such diamonds are put in the Colourless grading range and are assigned a letter of D (the highest), E or F. The next best grading range is called Near Colourless (G, H, I or J). Diamonds graded from K to Z have yellowish tints and are not considered colourless.

Clarity refers to a diamond’s inclusions and blemishes, which are very slight imperfections in the diamond’s interior that are nearly invisible to the naked eye. Diamonds that are VS2+ will be eye-clean, with imperfections only visible under 10x magnification. There are 6 categories, some of which are divided, for a total of 11 specific grades.

Flawless (FL) No inclusions and blemishes under 10x magnification
Internally Flawless (IF) No inclusions under 10x magnification
Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) Inclusions so slight they are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification
Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) Inclusions observed with effort under 10x magnification, characterised as minor
Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) Inclusions noticeable under 10x magnification
Included (I1, I2 and I3) Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification which may affect transparency and brilliance
